This video work from 2023 is based on an artistic intervention by Fritz Horstmann in the exhibition “Archaeology of Modernity” at the Bauhaus Dessau. The intervention engaged with objects from the Bauhaus Foundation’s Building Research Archive and did not only make them visible but also established new relationships between them. Inspired by the historical material studies of the Bauhaus, it allowed viewers to experience various dimensions of objects and materials. Our video takes up these approaches and asks what it might be that actually defines an object: is it the materials, form, use – or does an object only come into being through its context?
Perhaps it is less an object than an actor within a web of its relationships. Taking Horstmann’s assemblage as our starting point, we move from small to large in the video and ultimately develop our own assemblage, in which we ourselves experiment with the process of organising and establishing relationships.
Since 2024, the video has been on display in the exhibition “Lernort Bauhaus” at the Bauhaus Dessau.
